Destination wedding in Cuba
With Edmonton in a deep freeze, Rod, Stacey, and 45 friends & family headed to Cuba for a destination wedding.
The trip started off with a snow storm in Edmonton and coupled with the Edmonton International Airport Air Traffic Control computer problems, plus the plane being delayed from its previous destination, resulted in a delay to the flight to Calgary. Once in Calgary, the flight to Cuba was again delayed. In total, the trip was about 20 hours long from Edmonton to Cuba, including travel and waiting time.
However, the weather was incredible and soon everyone forgot stories about -30 degrees plus wind chill.
The resort was the Melia Las Dunas, just over an hours drive north of Santa Clara, Cuba. If you go there, you must try the Chicken Nuggets at the 24hr Sports Bar, as well as make a reservation at the Italian Restaurant! mmmm….good food!
The entire group enjoyed a week long stay in Cuba with beach volleyball games, pool parties, some tours and excursions including a Catamaran ride. The Catamaran ride including a stop for snorkeling and another one for watching Dolphins. The final stop was a Lobster or Chicken lunch on an island. As I step off the boat into the water, my ankle twists, I fall into the ocean water…..along with all of my camera gear! The bad news – one flash and my Ipod no longer work. My second flash is “critically injured” – it still works, but I’m not too sure for how long. The personal hard drive that has all of the high resolution digital images, Compact Flash cards, camera and lenses all survive! I’m very lucky to come away with only a sore ankle with only losing the flashes and Ipod.
All too soon, the week ends, and we are on the way back to Calgary with a 7 hour layover for the final flight to Edmonton. I can hardly wait for the next wedding.
